On September 30, the Central Secretariat, Komeito’s highest decision-making body, announced its endorsement of Mitsunari Okamoto, 61, to succeed Toshiko Takeya, who recently completed her term of office, as the party’s chief representative. He must win a majority of delegate votes at the Komeito National Convention on October 3 to secure his succession.

Okamoto’s nomination aligns closely with Komeito’s latest goals to carry out significant inhouse reforms to address an ever-shifting political landscape and to accelerate the formation of a united, centrist policy-based parliamentary counterforce to the current right-leaning coalition government. Moreover, Okamoto, an expert in global finance and current chair of Komeito’s policy research council, is widely seen among his legislative peers as a formidable political and policy visionary.
