Takeya: Japan must lead in ridding the world of nuclear arms

On August 5, Komeito Chief Representative Toshiko Takeya addressed a parliamentary debate organized by the Japan NGO Network for Nuclear Weapons Abolition and Japan Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons held in Hiroshima. Komeito’s political allies led by Centrist Reform Alliance President Junya Ogawa and Constitutional Democratic Party President Shunichi Mizuoka also attended the event.

In her speech, Takeya said Komeito has consistently advocated the abolition of nuclear weapons since its founding while engaging in peace diplomatic initiatives. While the world now faces serious security challenges, she urged that the Japanese government stay true to its three non-nuclear principles prohibiting not only the possession and production of nuclear weapons but also their deployment on Japanese soil. She also urged the government to participate in the first Review Conference of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons slated to be held this fall, as an official observer.

Among those who spoke at the debate, which was closed to the public, was Terumi Tanaka, co-chair of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Nihon Hidankyo, and Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs.
