Komeito looks to new political force this year

On July 2, the secretaries general of the Centrist Reform Alliance (CRA), Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP) and Komeito met in their first consultative meeting to discuss ways their parties can come together to serve as a viable alternative to the current coalition government comprised of the Liberal Democratic Party and Japan Innovation Party. Takeshi Shina of CRA, Masayo Tanabu of CDP and Makoto Nishida of Komeito agreed to operate under a new integrated framework for the next extraordinary session of the Diet.

The three also agreed to hold consultations on a weekly basis to reach an accord on organizational structure, policy and election cooperation, each area to be assigned with working-level officials. The first step, they said, was to begin discussions on party headquarters and membership requirements.

At their meeting, Nishida cited CRA’s five core principles adopted at its founding (see below) that rejected radical shifts in policy and instead pursues balanced policies harmonizing economic growth, social welfare and environmental responsibility. He added that other principles could be added or revised.

Hirotaka Ishikawa, secretary-general of the Komeito caucus in the House of Councillors and Nobuhiro Miura, Komeito chair of the Election Strategy Committee, also attended the meeting.
