Takeya speaks at Komeito Okinawa-hosted peace forum

On June 23, Komeito Chief Representative Toshiko Takeya took part in a forum on SDGs and peace organized by Komeito’s Okinawa prefectural chapter to observe Okinawa Memorial Day, which honors those who lost their lives in the bloodiest fighting of World War II in the Pacific. Tomohiro Inagaki, Representative of the Pugwash Conference Japan, and Yasukuni Kinjo, Centrist Reform Alliance (CRA) member of the House of Representatives, also took part in the event.

In his speech, Representative Inagaki underscored the need for initiatives reducing the risks inherent to nuclear deterrence, which remains central to the national security strategy of countries possessing nuclear weapons, and why the Pugwash conference was held there in 2025 was so significant. CRA member Kinjo called for the three non-nuclear principles of Japan—which forbids the owning or creating nuclear arms or allow them on its soil—to be upheld, pointing out that Okinawa must never again become a base for nuclear warheads as it was under the postwar administration of the US military. Citing the Japanese government’s tilt toward the right, Takeya said Komeito was committed to the adoption of a national security agenda that was both realistic and peacebuilding.

On the same day, Takeya and other Komeito officials traveled to the Peace Memorial Park at Mabuni in Itoman City to lay a wreath of flowers at the “The Cornerstone of Peace,” a monument on which the names of Okinawans who died in the battle over the island are inscribed. She was among the 3,500 people who gathered for the occasion, including Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

This year, 95 new names were added to the monument, raising the total to 243, 659 individuals.
