Three parties push to advance SOGI rights

On June 18, the Centrist Reform Alliance, Constitutional Democratic Party and Komeito kicked off their first meeting of a joint task force on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) affairs at which they spoke with government officials and representatives of the Japan Alliance for LGBT Legislation. As task force chair, Komeito House of Councillors member Masaki Taniai reiterated the three parties’ commitment to the protection of human rights for the sexual minority community while establishing a truly inclusive society in Japan. The first meeting took place two days after the coalition government led by Prime Minister Sanae Takagi endorsed a basic plan to expand public awareness of SOGI issues.
