Komeito pushing to legalize same-sex partnerships

On June 7, Komeito Chief Representative Toshiko Takeya spoke at Tokyo Pride 2026, “one of Asia’s largest and most symbolic events for the LGBTQ+ community,” according to the event’s website. Citing Komeito’s efforts in successfully extending national health insurance coverage for gender-affirming surgery, Takeya reaffirmed her party’s commitment to adopting the same-sex partnership oath system at both the national and local governments. She added that to ensure gender equality was to ensure basic human rights of every member of society.
