Komeito, CRA and CDP introduce latest economic plan

On May 20, the Centrist Reform Alliance, Constitutional Democratic Party and Komeito rolled out an emergency economic package that aims to not only soften the impact of the Middle East conflict on ordinary citizens and the socially vulnerable, but also in support of smaller businesses and the petrochemical sector. Komeito Chief Representative Toshiko Takeya reported that the program was developed from feedback from more than 12,000 people in a survey conducted by the three parties.

Takeya noted that because some of the existing aid programs would run out of funds in June, the latest tripartite program also seeks to provide sustainable support over a longer period of time. The latest proposal calls for subsidies on electricity, natural gas and gasoline, along with cash benefits for low-income earners and families with dependents. In addition, the parameters for workers eligible to receive the Employment Adjustment Subsidy would be eased and expanded.

Other measures include financial support to businesses hit by rising crude oil prices, which aims to prevent firms from passing rising costs on to consumers. Management assistance would also be provided to such public institutions as medical and nursing care facilities, while steps would be taken to stabilize the naphtha-derived basic chemicals supply chain, which are critical to manufacture essential medical supplies.
