LDP-Komeito delegation arrives in Beijing to bolster cooperation ties

On January 13, a delegation of parliamentarians led by the respective secretaries general of the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito arrived in Beijing. They are in China to discuss bilateral cooperation in such realms as politics, the economy and cultural exchange.

On the day they arrived, the delegates visited Tsinghua University, where they spoke with the institution’s president and Chinese Academy of Sciences member Qiu Yong. President Qiu stated his desire that cooperative ties between China and Japan must be sustainably strengthened in such areas as education, science and technology and culture and the arts. Conceding the issues and concerns between their two countries, LDP Secretary General Hiroshi Moriyama said he looked to make tangible advances cooperation and solidarity. His Komeito counterpart, Makoto Nishida, emphasized the importance of the exchange of students and specialists to spur greater recognition of the common values their nations shared.

Later, the Japanese legislators met with Li Shulei, head of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party Publicity Department, who noted that the two nations were at a crucial time in order to improve and advance relations. He added that he looked to this visit as an opportunity to further delve into political dialogue for the betterment of mutual trust and understanding.

The meeting between the ruling parties of Japan and China is the ninth since 2006, the previous one being held in Tokyo in October 2018. The meeting was suspended when the then-Democratic Party of Japan assumed the seat of Japan’s government in 2009; it was restarted in 2015 under the LDP-Komeito coalition.
