Yamaguchi seeks revising law after high court decision on transgender sterilization

October 27 , 2023

In his address to Komeito’s House of Councilors members on October 26, Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi expressed the need to amend a law requiring the sterilization of transgender people in order to comply with official documentation provisions, citing Japan’s Supreme Court ruling that the requirement was unconstitutional. He said it was rare for the Court to essentially overturn legal precedence and that it was up to the legislative branch to follow through on the ruling.

Komeito has been a consistent advocate of LGTB+ rights, lobbying for same-sex marriages to be recognized under national law and other initiatives to protect and promote the interests of the sexual minority community.
