Yamaguchi meets with top UN disarmament official

On October 13, Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, paid a courtesy call on Komeito. She was greeted by Komeito Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi and Masaaki Taniai, who chairs the party’s committee on nuclear abolition and House of Councilors member.

In their meeting, the UN Under-Secretary-General described the state of the nuclear disarmament movement as being stagnant, even regressive. She said it was necessary for the narrative to move beyond idealistic aspirations and shaping it as a viable solution to advance the security interests of all nations. Yamaguchi agreed, explaining that Komeito was urging the government to take part in the second Meeting of States Parties under the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons as an observer.
