Special considerations extended undocumented immigrants

The Ministry of Justice has decided to issue a special exemption for dependents of foreign nationals who are in Japan illegally, to stay in the country. The ministry’s decision comes after Komeito lobbied the government for the permit to be issued to families facing deportation based on humanitarian grounds following revisions to the country’s immigration law.

Children of undocumented immigrants who are born in Japan and attending Japanese schools are eligible. Some 200 kids fall under the purview, with each case to be examined at a hearing. The Immigration Services Agency is also likely to allow their parents a special work permit and use of the national health insurance program.
