LDP, Komeito recommit to partnering in Tokyo election district
September 1 , 2023
In a meeting over lunch on August 31, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who also heads the Liberal Democratic Party, and Natsuo Yamaguchi, the chief representative of Komeito, agreed that their two parties will provide mutual election support in the Tokyo district in the next House of Representatives contest. The two parties are partners in Japan’s coalition government and have coordinated their single-seat electoral districts nationwide since 1999.Earlier this year, the coalition partners announced that they would not extend that cooperation over the newly-created Tokyo No. 28 district seat. Following the lunch meeting, however, Yamaguchi and Kishida settled the issue, with Komeito agreeing not to field a candidate in that district and the LDP agreeing to back the Komeito candidate in Tokyo No. 29 district.
