Editorial: Party hopes China, non-aligned nations will help in mediating peace in Ukraine

August 15 , 2023

Some 18 months since Russia unilaterally attacked Ukraine, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights estimates that nearly 10,000 Ukrainian civilians have lost their lives. The international community clearly must spare no effort to halt hostilities and for Russia to withdraw their military forces from Ukraine.

That is why the international summit co-organized by the Ukrainian and Saudi Arabian governments that was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on August 5 and 6 is worthy of some note. Among the states that took part were India, Brazil, China, the US and Japan. Russia did not attend. A major point of discussion was the ten-point peace plan submitted by Kyiv in November 2022 that calls for the withdrawal of all Russian troops on Ukrainian soil, restoration of its territorial integrity and war crimes adjudication.

The G7 nations have already endorsed Kyiv’s peace plan. Komeito believes the Jeddah summit marks a step forward in resolving the conflict as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was able to meet with representatives from China, India, Brazil and South Africa—the “non-aligned” countries associated with Russia—and explain the gist of his plan.

Another noteworthy step was that the nations participating in the summit agreed to continue working together to achieve peace between Ukraine and Russia. While these are certainly baby steps, they reflect a measure of progress and path a path to additional initiatives going forward.
