On February 8, Komeito representatives led by Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi met with US Special Envoy to Advance the Human Rights of LGBTI+ Jessica Stern. She was in Tokyo on her way to Sydney to take part in WorldPride, which promotes LGBTI+ issues around the world.

In their meeting, Yamaguchi told the US special envoy that Komeito was committed to passing a bill ensuring the rights of Japan’s sexual and gender minority community. He said the Japanese government, as the host of the 2023 G7 summit to be held in Hiroshima, should take the lead in promoting such initiatives.

Noting that Japan and the US shared such values as democracy, human rights and protections against discrimination, Ms. Stern agreed that Japan bears a special responsibility in leading other G7 nations in the effort to institute legal protections for the LGBTI+ community.
