Komeito, LDP secure major win in Upper House contest

July 10 , 2022

All seven Komeito candidates running in multiple-seat election districts in the prefectures of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Aichi, Osaka, Hyogo and Fukuoka won in the House of Councillors election held on Sunday, July 10. Another six candidates were voted into office on the proportional representation ballot, securing a total of one less seat than the 14 seats won in 2019.

The Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito, the two political partners in Japan’s coalition government, combined for 76 of the Upper House's 125 seats that were being contested in this election. Their combined strength ensures that that coalition will secure a supermajority in the chamber.
