On June 17, a Komeito House of Councilors delegation led by Nobuhiro Miura and representatives of five support groups for the severely impaired met with Health, Labor and Welfare Vice Minister Hiroshi Yamamoto, who is also a Komeito member. The political party and support groups are urging the government to prioritize COVID-19 vaccination of individuals with severe impairment who cannot leave their homes as well as their caregivers.

Among the five support groups were the Japan Council on Independent Living Centers and Japan National Assembly of Disabled Peoples’ International. The groups presented cases in which the severely impaired and their family members had been infected by unvaccinated caregivers and called for immediate steps to remedy such tragedies. They are also hoping that the state conduct systematic and sustained PCR testing of caregiving facility workers.
