Saito: Hold TPNW meet at atomic bombing sites
February 23 , 2021
At a House of Representatives budget committee hearing on February 22, Tetsuo Saito, deputy chief representative of Komeito, reiterated his party’s call to hold the Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) at Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the respective dates of their atomic bombings, August 6 and 9.Saito said that Japan, as an official observer to the Conference, could contribute to global peace by drawing upon the testimonials of hibakusha, the victims who survived the attacks. The ultimate goal, he explained, was to lay the groundwork for Japan to become a signatory to the Treaty.
Saito added that the Japanese government should take the initiative in proposing new security alternatives to nuclear deterrence.
