On December 24, a Komeito group on SDG policy held a hearing on the Japanese government’s SDGs Action Plan 2021, which incorporates a number of programs that the party aims to implement in the post-pandemic era. The group, led by House of Councilors member Masaaki Taniai, seeks to position the party in following up on the government’s realization of the sustainable development goals it set up for Japan. The action plan centers around four major realms: preparing for the next deadly epidemic, adopting an economic growth strategy leveraging the private sector and sci-tech innovation, realizing a genuine carbon-neutral society, and redressing child poverty issues.
