On November 6, Komeito Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi addressed the National Conference of Prefectural Representatives, reaffirming the party’s position on balancing the need to combat and control COVID-19 with the need to animate society and stimulate the economy. Komeito, he said, will be calling for even stronger and more effective measures against the pandemic, particularly in terms of testing, diagnosis and a vaccination program, while allaying public concerns over employment and economic uncertainty.

Yamaguchi also urged the government to undertake the necessary initiatives to carbon neutralize Japan, reducing the country’s dependency on nuclear power as it expands use of renewable and new energy sources—measures that he believes will serve as drivers of new economic growth.

Yamaguchi then referred to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons going into effect after the minimum 50 countries ratified the international agreement, calling for the government to not only seek observer status in the post-ratification Conference of the Parties, but also invite participants to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
