At a joint session of Komeito’s House of Councilors and House of Representatives legislators, Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi called for party unity under a new leadership framework. He stated that Komeito will be working closely with the new government led by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga in an effort to combat and neutralize the pandemic, expedite Japan’s transition to a digital world and other urgent political objectives.Yamaguchi also renewed his party’s call to abolish nuclear weapons, citing the fact that 50 countries recently ratified the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the minimum number of states needed for the treaty to go into effect. He described Japan’s role as “crucial” in guiding world opinion on the issue.
