On August 5, Komeito Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi led a group of senior party officials to Hiroshima, visiting a landmark of the atomic bombing against the city 75 years ago. The facility was a military warehouse complex located just 2.7 kilometers from Ground Zero.

Of the four warehouses in the complex, the city government slated two of them for demolition in December 2019 due to concerns over their structural integrity in a major earthquake. Members of Komeito’s Hiroshima legislative assembly quickly opposed the plan, however, calling instead that all four buildings be preserved as a legacy for future generations. The city has pushed back demolition plans since then, but it has yet to cancel them.

Yamaguchi described the warehouse complex as a testimonial of the tragedy that struck Hiroshima, a message that must be conveyed to the future and a symbol for the global effort to abolish nuclear weapons.
