Komeito: Step up dialogue for nuclear disarmament

On August 4, Komeito Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi met with Izumi Nakamitsu, United Nations Under-Secretary-General of Disarmament Affairs, with the two agreeing that Japan should assume a leadership role in promoting dialogue to rid the world of nuclear arms. They also agreed that it was vital for the 2020 Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Review Conference, which was postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic, to succeed.At the meeting, the senior UN official delivered a personal message to Yamaguchi from UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who conveyed his wishes to visit Hiroshima on the 75th anniversary of the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan but was prevented from doing so with the coronavirus outbreak.
