On June 5, Komeito House of Representative member Noriko Furuya, who chairs the party’s task force to promote equal opportunity, presented Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga with a proposal to fundamentally strengthen the existing law on sex crime. While the law was revised three years ago, Furuya said the revisions did not clearly define the parameters of sexual violence and intimidation. She called on the justice ministry panel that is reexamining the law to hold further hearings on sex crime victims and support groups to institute the necessary legal changes. She also said the government’s “one-stop” counseling service should be fortified, enabling it to operate on a 24-hour basis, 365 days a year, with a toll-free call center made available to callers from anywhere in Japan at night as well as on holidays.
