Yamaguchi addresses major party convention
May 24 , 2020
On May 23, Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi spoke at Komeito’s National Convention of Prefectural Representatives held nationwide online. In his address, Yamaguchi reiterated the party’s commitment to battling to the utmost the pandemic across all fronts, from the health and welfare of all residents to the reinvigoration of economic activity. He said the nation must prepare itself to face and overcome the pandemic’s second and third waves. The first step in this process, he explained, will be in enacting a second supplemental budget that incorporates the party’s manifold proposals during the current Diet session, which ends on June 17.As to the areas the supplemental budget should be allocated, Yamaguchi said one priority would be to expand the special provisional grant provided to local governments to support small businesses, particularly in the service sector of larger cities. He also said that additional spending should go to enhancing a subsidy to help firms retain workers rather than furloughing them, offering subordinate loans, aiding single-parent families and backstopping nursing and disabled care services.
