At a House of Councilors budget committee hearing held on May 13, Komeito’s Kozo Akino called on the government to distribute greater numbers of pulse oximeters, a device to measure the level of oxygen saturation in the bloodstream, at lodgings for people suffering from milder symptoms of the COVID-19 virus. Akino suggested that the procurement should be funded through a special appropriations grant extended to local governments.

Another Komeito member at the hearing, Nobuhiro Miura, also recommended that the government should help local governments by providing paramedics with additional compensation for the risk their work entails during the pandemic.
