Komeito Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi spoke with reporters after meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on April 7 following the government’s declaration of a national emergency earlier that day. Yamaguchi said he told the prime minister that it was vital for the national government to coordinate closely with local governments in combatting the COVID-19 outbreak. He added that he hoped the declaration would lead to a heightened awareness among the public regarding the seriousness of the situation and strengthen the resolve of every Japanese to see safely to the end.

Yamaguchi was also pleased that the government had decided to pay out 300,000 yen to every household as part of its economic stimulus package, which Komeito strongly endorsed.
