On February 12, Keiko Yoneyama, the head of a national organization promoting the redistribution of unsold foods, visited Yoshiro Kawano, Komeito member who is the parliamentary secretary for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Cabinet. Ms. Yoneyama submitted a proposal seeking ministerial assistance in bolstering up the operations of foodbanks to service social welfare facilities and low-income families. Kawano pledged support, agreeing that foodbanks not only help in easing food loss, but also help in expanding social services for the needy.

Ms. Yoneyama was accompanied by a nonpartisan group of national legislators, including Komeito’s Noriko Furuya and Toshiko Takeya.
