On January 6, Komeito Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi spoke at the party’s new year leaders meeting held in Tokyo, outlining a broad range of domestic and foreign challenges that Komeito will be addressing in 2020. He reaffirmed Komeito’s commitment to tuition-free education for all children up to high school, an initiative that the party has worked on for years and which will be taking full effect in 2020, as well as to developing a social security system for all generations.

He also underscored the importance of securing robust economic health, particularly the post-Games economy through active government involvement. As a key step in this goal, Yamaguchi called for the passing of the fiscal 2019 supplementary and fiscal 2020 budgets, which includes programs to create demand, in the coming months.

Turning to foreign policy, Yamaguchi cited improving Japan-China relations, with the planned visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping as a state guest this spring as a milestone in the process—results that Komeito has been instrumental in achieving. Furthermore, he pointed out that Japan, given her ties to both the US and China, must serve as a bridge between Beijing and Washington to resolve their ongoing trade row.
