On October 22, Komeito Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi met President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan in Tokyo and agreed to strengthen bilateral exchange through such realms as culture and sports. International Affair Committee chair Masaaki Taniai (House of Councilors member) and Policy Research Council deputy chair Tomoko Ukishima (House of Representatives member) attended the meeting.

President Ghani began by reiterating his felicitations on Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement ceremony successful conclusion as well as gratitude for the invitation to the ceremony. He also offered his condolences to the victims of Typhoon Hagibis. He added that he remained committed to broadening the range of bilateral exchange with Japan and looked to further strengthen ties going forward.

Yamaguchi welcomed President Ghani to Japan and, speaking of his visit to Afghanistan on an inspection of a demining operation in 2004, he said that making the country safer and more secure would lead to additional assistance from Japan.
