Inoue speaks on Japan’s new plea bargaining system
On June 1, Komeito Secretary General Yoshihisa Inoue spoke to the press regarding the plea bargaining system introduced in Japan that day and other topical issues. While acknowledging that the system should prove effective in fighting organized crime, Inoue cautioned that safeguards must be rigorously implemented to alleviate the possibility of abuse, including false accusations against an innocent third party. Under the plea bargaining system as currently constituted, parties that falsely accuse another person face up to five years imprisonment.
