Party-backed single parent financial assistance approved

January 19 , 2018

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare will be instituting a program from fiscal 2018 to alleviate the cost of education in support of unmarried single parents in economic hardship. Under the program, these individuals will be eligible for income and resident tax deductions and allowances the government extends to widows and widowers, as well as financial assistance for daycare services for dependents.

Other initiatives include financial support for single mothers who enroll in various vocational training programs to become registered nurses, care workers and other careers.

Local governments have been offering similar programs, but Komeito lobbied hard for a national program to be implemented.

The number of unmarried single parents has been on the rise in recent years, while annual incomes for unmarried single mothers are falling way short of the national average for married mothers.
