Party pushing for medical coverage for GD patients

December 16 , 2017

Members of a Komeito team on gender identity issues met with Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare officials on December 15 to discuss national health insurance coverage for individuals diagnosed with gender dysphoria (GD) and seeking sex realignment surgery.

Individuals with GD suffer from differences between the sex and gender they were assigned at birth, caused by psychological, behavioral or biological factors. Many opt for surgery to realign their sexual anatomy to their gender identity.

The health ministry reported that such surgeries should be covered under the national medical health program from fiscal 2018. Komeito has been pushing for coverage, including it in the party’s priority policy agenda during the House of Representative elections held in 2017.
