Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi and a delegation comprising of Komeito’s International Affairs Bureau Director and House of Representatives member Kiyohiko Toyama, Local Assembly Bureau Director Hisashi Inatsu and House of Councilors Policy Council Director Kanae Yamamoto depart for Russia today, September 12.

On September 11, ahead of their departure, they met with Russian Ambassador to Japan, His Excellency Evgeny V. Afanasiev, at the Russian Embassy in Tokyo.

During their meeting Yamaguchi said that the purpose of their visit was to deepen understanding and cooperation with Russia in resolving the North Korea crisis and pressing ahead with their agreement on conducting joint economic activities in the Northern Territories, which remains a bilateral issue of disputed territoriality.

Ambassador Afanasiev strongly condemned North Korea’s nuclear tests and stated that Russia also “aims for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

The two concurred that promoting intergovernmental exchange between the nations was vital for strengthening Japan-Russia relations.
