Hamayotsu (standing) announces her retirement on Dec. 5

December 6: New Komeito Acting Chief Representative Toshiko Hamayotsu formally announced her retirement on Saturday, December 5. Hamayotsu will retire when her term of office as a member of the House of Councilors ends in the summer of 2010.

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Hamayotsu graduated from Keio University’s School of Law in 1967 and passed the national bar examination two years later. While serving on various human rights committees of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations and other legal groups, she was elected to parliament in 1992.

She assumed her current post in 1998 and was instrumental in legislating a broad number of laws to protect the rights of women, children, the elderly and disabled.
