January 30: Noting that a consensus is developing among Diet members to reform the Political Funding Control Law, New Komeito Secretary General Yoshihisa Inoue called for the establishment of a non-partisan parliamentary council to discuss revisions to the law.

Speaking with reporters on Friday, January 29, Inoue said such move would demonstrate the degree of a party’s commitment to cracking down on continued violations of the law. He added that the council should discuss ways to hold a national legislator accountable for improprieties involving political contributions committed by their aides, as well as prohibit donations not only from companies but also political support organizations.

Saito said nonpartisan discussions should also focus on closing other loopholes in the law, including such vague accounting entries as “organizational activities expenses” that politicians often pocket for themselves.
